Lotte Mart, E-mart and convenience stores accelerate in Vietnam — 'K-retail' expands into ASEAN amid weak home demand

Lotte Mart opened its 16th Vietnam store in Tay Ninh — its first new opening in about three years — while GS25, CU and E-mart grow across Vietnam and ASEAN. As weak domestic demand and e-commerce push K-retail to use Vietnam as a growth base, shelf access widens for Korean food, consumer-goods and distribution partners.

What happened

Korea's large retailers are accelerating store openings in emerging Asian markets. Lotte Mart opened a new store in the southern industrial city of Tay Ninh on July 10 — its first new Vietnam opening in about three years, since the Ho Tay (Hanoi) store. The Tay Ninh store spans about 2,165 m² across one basement and one ground floor, stocking around 1,500 Korean food items, 300 ready meals and about 400 Korean cosmetics; roughly 88% of the assortment is food. Lotte Mart now runs 16 stores in Vietnam and 64 overseas (48 in Indonesia), with another opening flagged in Bac Giang this year.

Convenience stores head to ASEAN too

Korean convenience-store brands have topped 1,700 overseas outlets. GS25 runs 742 across Vietnam and Mongolia, and CU leads with 855 overseas (603 in Mongolia, 184 in Malaysia and more). E-mart's No Brand is expanding into Mongolia, Laos and Thailand.

Why go abroad

The backdrop is weak home demand. Per Korea's trade ministry, hypermarket sales fell 5.1% in May year on year while e-commerce rose 8.8%. As the domestic market cedes ground to e-commerce, retail majors turn to ASEAN's growth headroom.

What it means for Korean companies

As K-retail stores multiply in Vietnam, the "proven distribution channel" for Korean food, consumer goods and cosmetics widens — opening shelf placement, local sourcing/logistics partnerships and private-label production for Korean partners. But shelf competition is fierce and local food/cosmetics certification and labeling must be addressed.

Opportunities

  • Shelf placement of Korean food, consumer goods and cosmetics in K-retail stores like Lotte Mart and GS25
  • Local sourcing, logistics and private-label (PB) production partnerships
  • Using the channel to test-market K-culture-driven Korean consumer goods in Vietnam

Risks

  • Intense shelf competition — hard to enter without brand strength or price competitiveness
  • Local food/cosmetics certification and labeling requirements must be met

Recommended actions

  • Map the Vietnam opening plans and sourcing needs of K-retailers like Lotte Mart and GS25
  • Prepare products, packaging and certification to local standards
  • Consider off-shelf routes too, such as PB and local sourcing partnerships
